Keluaran 21:30-31

21:30 If a ransom is set for him, ¹  then he must pay the redemption for his life according to whatever amount was set for him. 21:31 If the ox ²  gores a son or a daughter, the owner ³  will be dealt with according to this rule. ⁴

22:9 In all cases of illegal possessions, ⁵  whether for an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any kind of lost item, about which someone says ‘This belongs to me,’ ⁶  the matter of the two of them will come before the judges, ⁷  and the one whom ⁸  the judges declare guilty ⁹  must repay double to his neighbor.

[21:30]  ¹ sn The family of the victim would set the amount for the ransom of the man guilty of criminal neglect. This practice was common in the ancient world, rare in Israel. If the family allowed the substitute price, then the man would be able to redeem his life.
